Madama Butterfly Animation
The movie version of Madama Butterfly showed raw emotion and I felt more attached to the characters than in the animation. In Act 1 Pinkerton made all these promises to Butterfly to return back to her and you could see how emotional this scene was and how tender and real it seemed. In Act 2 she opens a letter from Pinkerton three years later and he finds out they have a son together so he finally returns to Butterfly. He brings his American wife and realizes that Butterfly has counted every day he has been gone and realizes how in love she is with him. In the movie you can see the heartbreak and how intense he emotions are. Pinkerton and his wife also think it's best for Butterfly's son to go home with them because Butterfly is now poor and cannot provide for their son. You can see when the mood shifts and her sorrow fills her body and can tell she is about to commit suicide because of how Pinkerton has betrayed their promise and love. I personally liked the movie more than the real opera because I didn't like the puppet child or the black background. I didn't love the animation version because there was no singing and it was kind of confusing to follow the plot line if I hadn't already seen the movie version. Although my favorite version was the movie, my favorite part of the animation was when she gave her child to Pinkerton and his wife and the umbilical cord was still attached to Butterfly and her son. I think this was symbolism that showed her last hope that Pinkerton and her still had a connection. When she cut the string it represented the end of their love and she finally let him go.
