Opera was born in Italy 400 years ago in Florence. The Camerata were a diverse intellectual group that argued about classical culture, arts and sciences. They talked about combining drama, design, music, poetry, and dance to create the ultimate art form... opera. Finally opera would take off in the early 1600s as Monteverdi's L'Orfeo was performed which covered a story about love, god, and the afterlife. Monteverdi would have a choir consisting only of men. Opera's were even banned by monarchs in order to not give any individuals the idea of rebelling. They were right, operas got political and inspired citizens to rebel against monarchy. Camille Demunda shouted at French patriots to liberate themselves from the control of the monarchy in Paris and many stormed the prison of the Bastille that was a symbol of repression, this sparked the revolution. Performance art allows each individual to interpret art any way they choose. Art can be anything you want and there is no wrong or right way to create. Performance art lets people be as expressive as they want in any way shape or form. It can be dance, poetry, music, performance, paintings, sculptures, graffiti, everyday stuff turned into artwork, etc, there are infinite ways to express yourself and to create art. Performance art brings everyone together because it is unique and people can talk about each interpretation and what emotions arise when they look at it and everyone will have different opinions and responses. Dance is my favorite performance art because I feel most connected to the emotions that pour out of each performance. There are so many genres and I resonate most with hip hop because I love the beat of music and watching street performers feel the beat and move with the music.
